How to Track Job Applications Effectively
Build a reliable application tracking workflow for statuses, documents, notes, reminders, and follow-ups.
6 minute read
Application tracking should reduce uncertainty and help you take the next action. A list of company names alone cannot do that.
Record the opportunity source
Save the title, organisation, canonical application link, location, compensation when available, and the date you found or added it.
Keep submitted evidence attached
Store the exact CV, cover letter, portfolio, or other document version used for the application.
Use statuses with dates
Track meaningful transitions such as added, applied, interview, offer, hired, rejected, or withdrawn, and record when they occurred.
Turn notes into next actions
Use reminders for follow-ups and deadlines. Keep notes factual enough that you can resume the application without reconstructing context.
Key takeaways
- Track the exact document version submitted
- Date each meaningful status change
- Use reminders to convert information into action
